An improper cargo load is a common cause for fatal 18-wheeler accidents. Loads that are unbalanced, over-weight, or shift in transit can cause the driver of an 18-wheeler to lose control.
An 18-wheeler overturned on U.S. Highway 165 in Pineville, shutting down all northbound lanes of the highway. The investigating police officer indicated that the truck driver was trying to turn when the truck’s load shifted causing the truck to overturn. The question remains, why did the load shift?
The truck driver is responsible for this load. Abrupt turns or stops can cause the load to shift. The truck driver should have knowledge of his cargo and its weight, the placement of the load on the trailer, and confirm the load is secure in transportation. The driver should have conducted a pre-trip inspection. Cargo overload and an improperly secure tanker can also cause load shift. If you are driving a passenger vehicle, try to stay clear of the 18-wheeler. Fortunately, there was no vehicle beside this over-turned tractor-trailer.
