Barge worker Sues Kirby Island Over Benzene Exposure

bargeA mechanic filed suit under the Jones Act against a Houston based marine shipping company alleging that his serious illness was due to benzene exposure. During the 17 years he was employed by Kirby Inland Marine, he was charged with the task of addressing mechanical problems on the company’s barges.

His lawsuit alleges that the company’s failure to provide a safe work environment resulted in his exposure to benzene and other hazardous and toxic chemicals which caused disabling injuries and disability. The complaint notes that Kirby Inland Marine failed to provide a respirator when the mechanic worked with dangerous chemicals and faults the company for not covering the medical expenses as required under the Jones Act
