Salmonella Related Pistachio Recall

The ripple effects of salmonella contamination are indeed troubling…not only from both a public health perspective, but an economic one as well. The latest example is illustrated by the recent FDA report noting that Harry and David, of Medford, Oregon, has initiated a nationwide voluntary recall of six Harry and David products, Caramels and Clusters, a Capiz Chocolate Tower containing Caramels and Clusters, a Directions Engineering Buffet containing Caramels and Nut Clusters, a Garden Tote aka Garden Party Tote aka Garden Delight Basket containing Sahale/Harry and David Ksar Pistachios, a Start the Party Wine Gift Basket aka Start the Party with Wine Basket containing Sahale/Harry and David Ksar Pistachios and Sahale/Harry and David Marrakesh Pistachios. These products, according to the FDA posting, contain pistachios that may be part of the recall by Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. due to possible contamination with Salmonella.

Salmonella, or salmonellosis, is the most common foodborne illness in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) receive reports of approximately 40,000 cases of salmonellosis in the United States each year – and the CDC estimates that hundreds of thousands more cases go unreported.
