The scope of the pistachio salmonella recall continues to widen which underscores the fact that food borne illness related recalls have serious economic impacts in addition to the havoc caused by the food borne illness itself for victims.
It’s now been reported that South Korea has ordered the recall and banned sales of pistachios made by Setton Farms of Terra Bella, California, because of possible salmonella contamination. On March 30, 2009 Setton announced that it was voluntarily recalling specific lots of bulk roasted shelled pistachios and tote bags of roasted inshell pistachios sold to wholesale customers due to potential contamination with the Salmonella organism. According to the company, it took this “voluntarily” measure after learning that roasted shelled pistachios it processed and sold to a commercial customer in late 2008 tested positive for Salmonella.
