In Hartford, CT, officials are investigating an Aetna Cafeteria in response to a possible E. Coli (Escherichia coli) outbreak. At least 5 employees have contracted E. Coli over the past 3-4 weeks. The most recent victim was rushed to the emergency room and hospitalized.
E. coli is a common food borne illness. In most cases, the e. coli bacteria is harmless, but in certain serotypes, like E. Coli O157:H7, it can be dangerous, even deadly. It has also been known to cause Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a serious condition the can lead to life-threatening kidney failure.
Connecticut officials are continuing to monitor the E. Coli outbreak. At this time, the Aetna Cafeteria is still open for business- but, if I was an Aetna employee, I think I’d pack a lunch.
