Feds Extend 18 Wheeler Trailer Light Rule

Federal officials are extending the requirement that tractor trailers with anti-lock brake systems have an external anti-lock malfunction indicator lamp until September 1 and are considering making it permanent.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) published the items in the March 3 Federal Register.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has requested that the trailer light rule requirement remain indefinitely. The goal is to require this equipment to allow officials to fully analyze its safety and consideration of making it a permanent regulation. The requirement of an external anti-lock malfunction indicator lamp should remain indefinitely to promote the safety and assist the truck driver in the handling of his trailer during emergency braking.
