A group of Chinese dairies that were responsible for supplying the tainted milk that killed 5 infants and sickened nearly 300,000 more has agreed to pay up to $160 million to the victims.
The settlement would equate to about $550 per victim, approximately three months salary for a typical factory worker. The diaries will also be making payments for victims in need of long term care of their injuries.
A number of law suits have been filed on behalf of poisoned victims; however, none have been accepted by Chinese courts. Dozens of criminal trials have started against dairy middlemen accused of endangering public security for financial gain.
